My Grandma Byrd (Lanie), married a few times and widowed as well, was living life in the same trailer in the same park she had been in for more than 25 years in Topeka, KS. It's the only home I've ever known her in.
My Grandpa Haas (Jerry), now residing in Sequim, WA, got remarried to Sharon shortly after his marriage to my Grandma ended. She was a gal whom he adored and loved deeply for more than 40 years, and I was fortunate to call her my Grandmother as well. Last year, cancer took my Grandma Sharon away from us, after a long-fought battle. Without her around I feared my Grandpa would give up on his own life.
It started with a phone call...
After a few chats over the phone, my Grandma and Grandpa found comfort in one another's voices and soon began reminiscing over memories nearly two of my lifetimes ago. It became a routine for them - calling each other every day, sometimes multiples times a day. Their curiosity about each other grew and reached a point where they were ready to reunite.
So, last November, my Grandma hopped a plane to Washington to go visit her ex-husband. Keep in mind, the last time these two had seen each other or even been in the same room was the day I was born, 25 years ago.
Only they know everything that happened on my Grandma's trip up to Sequim, but, as cheesy as it sounds, they began rekindling their love after half a century of stagnancy.
I don't know the whole background story of how ugly or dark the end of their marriage was, but what I'm seeing is my two grandparents who stepped back into each other's lives at 82 and 84 years old. How cool is that?
My Mom and Aunt said they were like giddy teenagers together. They couldn't get enough of one another. There was spring in their step and they felt stronger and happier than they had been in too long.
Their reunion caused some drama in the family, being that my Grandma Sharon had just passed away not long before.
The way I see it, though, they deserve to be happy. Just because they're getting older doesn't mean love, adventure and excitement can't exist. If this is what they get when they're together, I'm their biggest fan.

Today, my Grandma has sold her house, packed up her belongings and made the move to be with my Grandpa.
They're going to go spend their last years together.
And who says real life and love can't be like something out of the movies?
